The Department of Community Medicine and Medical Education Unit hosted a Hands-on Workshop on Sampling Techniques and Sample Size Calculation on 15^th September 2023 in the Central Library's computer lab.

A total of 38 people including post-graduate and faculty members from various colleges like B. J. Medical College, Dr. D.Y. Patil Dental College, MIMER, Seth G.S. Medical College, Dr. D.Y. Patil College of Nursing, DY Patil Medical College and research center, Sadhu Viswani college of nursing, YCM Medical College, Dr. D.Y. Patil Homeopathy College, Dr. D.Y. Patil College of Physiotherapy and Dr. D.Y. Patil Ayurveda College participated.

The primary objective of the workshop was to enhance participants' proficiency in sampling methods and the determination of sample sizes, with a focus on simplifying complex formulas. The workshop covered a broad spectrum of topics, encompassing sampling techniques and the practical application of statistical software tools like WIN-PEPI and G*Power. It comprised both explanatory and hands-on sessions. During the explanatory sessions, participants were introduced to fundamental concepts related to sampling techniques and sample size calculations, with an emphasis on minimizing the use of intricate formulas.

These sessions covered essential terminology used in sampling, various types of sampling methods, the critical inputs necessary for sample size calculations, and an exploration of the advantages and disadvantages associated with large and small sample sizes. Furthermore, the distinction between randomization and random sampling was elucidated. The morning session prior to lunch focused on the demonstration of sample size estimation using statistical software. The facilitator guided participants through the process, after which attendees replicated the steps on their own laptops. This practical approach allowed participants to grasp the techniques involved in estimating sample sizes effectively. In the afternoon session, participants engaged in hands-on activities involving the Paired-t Test and ANOVA. During this session, participants were given sample size estimation problems to solve independently. Resource faculty members were readily available to assist those encountering difficulties. It was ensured that participants could proceed to the next problem only after demonstrating competence in solving the current one. Additionally, a hands-on session on randomization was conducted, accompanied by a brief explanation of its rationale.

Throughout the workshop, participants had the opportunity to discuss their own research proposals, fostering interactivity and knowledge exchange. Attendees actively contributed their perspectives and sought clarification for any doubts they had. Post-workshop assessments demonstrated a noticeable improvement in both knowledge and practical skills among the participants. The attendees expressed their appreciation for the valuable insights and guidance received during the sessions, particularly in simplifying complex concepts related to sample size determination.

The feedback received from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. The majority of attendees described the sessions as outstanding. Nearly all participants expressed satisfaction with the hands-on learning experiences provided. They also commended the personalized support and guidance offered by the faculty and resident experts, highlighting their appreciation for the individual attention they received. Feedback given by participants included: “A very nice interactive hands-on workshop”. “A nicely explained and easy-to-understand session”. “Very helpful staff” Suggestions for improvement included “Improve the status of desktops with screen sharing”.
