Dr. Shailaja Mane, Professor and Head, Department of Pediatrics, Lactation Consultant was invited and delivered a talk on “Breast Health in Adolescent Girls” during the conference. It was very well appreciated by all.

Dr. Shradha Salunkhe, Professor, Department of Pediatrics and Lactation Consultant, was invited as a panellist on “Case studies in breastfeeding – Problem solving skills & Strategies.” She gave apt guidance about various issues like breastfeeding in premature newborn, Hyperlactation etc.

Dr. Shilpa Kshirsagar, Associate Professor, Department of ObGyn and Lactation Consultant moderated this panel discussion.

Dr. Shilpa Kshirsagar had written, directed and performed a role in a Nukkad natak (Street-play) on importance of breastfeeding, which was conducted on 29th August at at Kalakar katta, Goodluck Cafe, F. C. Road, Pune.

Dr. Shilpa participated in the rally to support the breast-feeding. She won a State as well as National-level first prize in Poem competition as well.

Dr. Pramila Menon took session on basics of breastfeeding and breastfeeding in working mothers for the PG students. She spoke about adequacy indicators and long-term benefits of breastfeeding. After which she took an antenatal session for pregnant mothers in the gynecology OPD. She told them the benefits of breastfeeding to the mother, to the baby and the society and importance of early skin to skin contact and initiation of breastfeeding. Sensitization of expecting moms about breastfeeding along with their families is very crucial for breastfeeding success.

Recipe Competition was held for Nursing staff of all the departments. The recipes were to be pre-cooked at home and displayed during competition. Aligning to the theme of this year, staff were asked to prepare snacks which are nutritional and galactogogue-rich. Snacks that have a good shelf-life are easy to prepare and can be carried to work. They were judged on the basis of taste, nutritional content and presentation by Mrs. Vaishali Madkaikar, Mrs. Samiksha Chordiya and Ms. Rashmi Poduval.

Dr. Pathare sir did the inauguration of poster competition and breastfeeding awareness rally by students. Students depicted in their posters, ways to manage breastfeeding in working parents and how employers can make the workplace more breastfeeding friendly. Posters were explained to the parents and interested viewers by the students.The queries asked by the judges were answered by the participants.

They also distributed new updated information brochure on breatsfeeding and nutrition laddoos for breastfeeding mothers.

Dr. Shilpa Kshirsagar conducted a hands-on training session at Aditya Birla Hospital, Chinchwad for 10 NICU staff and emphasized the importance of breastfeeding in NICU babies. She emphasized lactation management and support for the mothers whose babies are admitted in the NICU and how to help these mothers enhance and maintain a good milk supply for their babies. She also spoke about smooth transition of these preterm babies from gavage feeding to breastfeeding.

Vaishali ma'am also highlighted the importance of good hydration and water intake and clarified various diet related myths. She also spoke about inclusion of specific evidence-based galactogogues in a mother's diet and how they can help maintain a good milk supply.

She explained how to manage oral feeding in these babies and what precautions are needed to be taken. She also spoke about role of various supportive interventions and transition to breastfeeding in these babies.

Ms. Rashmi Poduval spoke about Human Milk Banking, its role in the care of infants and how it is the second-best choice in circumstances where Mother’s Own Milk is not available. Ms. Rashmi explained about the infrastructure needed for a Human Milk Bank and what are the different procedures that are carried out in an HMB. She also spoke in brief about informal milk sharing and what are the concerns associated with it. In certain circumstances where Milk sharing has some role, she explained what the recent guidelines are to make it safer for the babies.

Members of Sneh Foundation conducted a beautiful educational skit in the PNC ward and the pediatric OPD. She spoke about how all the family members can share responsibilities and make breastfeeding experience more comfortable and easy for the mother. She also highlighted the role of peer support and healthcare workers in protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding.

They emphasized that seeking early help for all the issues is very crucial for resolving the problem at the earliest. They demonstrated breast massage milk expression and correct latching techniques with the help of breastfeeding.

The session was coordinated by Dr. Neha Kulkarni who is an Industrial Health Worker. Dr. Shailaja Mane spoke about numerous benefits of breastfeeding and Ms. Rashmi Poduval explained the correct techniques of breastfeeding.

Dr. Puja Padbidri, a certified neonatal therapist conducted a session for mothers whose infants were admitted in the NICU. The purpose of the session was to provide families an overview of how feeding develops over time. The session focused on various strategies mothers can use to make the progression from tube feeding to full oral feeds easier. She used videos to provide families with specific observable skills to ensure feeding is going well with their babies as they get ready to go home.

The Closing Ceremony for World Breastfeeding Week 2023 at Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune was graced by Dr. J.S. Bhawalkar sir, Dean - Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Pimpri, Pune, Dr. P Vatsalaswamy ma'am - Director Academics DYPMCH and Brigadier Dr. Amarjeet Singh - Principal Director and CEO DYPMCH. Rtn Harbinder Singh Dullat - President Rotary Club of Nigdi, Pune were the Chief Guest for the event. Dr. Sulakshane - Executive Board Member IAP, Pune, Dr. Amol Mehta - Medical Director Rotary Club of Nigdi Pune, Dr. Sujata Sawant- Principal Dr. D.Y. Patil Institute of Nursing Education were also present amongst the Dignitaries for the event.

The program began with inviting the dignitaries on the Dias and a Welcome address by Dr. Shailaja Mane ma'am - Professor and Head, Dept. of Paediatrics, DYPMCH. Dr. Pramila Menon - Professor, Dept. of Pediatrics and UNICEF Consultant, explained this year's World Breastfeeding Week theme which was about Making a Difference for Working Parents. A summary about various activities conducted during the World Breastfeeding Week 2023 was given by Ms. Rashmi Poduval - Lactation Consultant, DYPMCH. The Dignitaries were then invited to say a few words and each one of them encouraged and appreciated the entire team for their work and efforts.

Rotary Club of Nigdi- Pune donated a High Definition Printer and containers for pasteurization and storage of donor milk, to Yashoda Advanced Human Milk Bank.

The highlight of the event was the wonderful role-play performed by Interns. It was about encouraging and supporting Breastfeeding in working mothers once they resume their job. The skit was coordinated by Dr. Hetal Rathod, Head, Dept of Community Medicine, DYPMCH.

The ceremony then ended with distribution of awards to all the Winners and Judges of various competitions that were organized throughout the World Breastfeeding Week 2023. The Vote of thanks was given by Dr. Shradha Salunkhe- Professor, Dept

of Paediatrics. The event was a great success and appreciated by all.

She enumerated various benefits it will offer to the employers, employee and the entire nation.

Ms. Rashmi Poduval spoke about how mothers can maintain a good milk supply even after resuming work and how they can continue breastfeeding/ breast milk feeding to their babies even after resuming work.
