Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME) workshop approved by National Medical Commission was conducted from 12-14 June 2023 at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune by the Medical Education Unit. NMC Appointed Coordinator, Dr. (Col) P. S. Chawla -Professor & Head, Department of Community Medicine, Smt. Kashibai Navale Medical College and General Hospital, Nahre, Pune supervised the workshop. The workshop attended by ttwenty-nine medical teachers.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dean, Dr. J. S. Bhawalkar who gave overview and importance of BCME as an important tool to implement CBME. Dr. (Mrs.) P. Valsalaswamy, Director Academics, shared words of wisdom on MEU concept.

The first day started with Pre-test and was followed by introduction of faculty and participants. The participants were divided into small groups, pair and share activity followed by introduction of their friends. This informal “icebreaking” helped in creating a friendly atmosphere. Dr S.K. Kathpalia helped the group to understand and apply concepts of group dynamics. The objective was to apply these concepts in working of groups/teams in teaching and learning so that the participants enjoy the teaching learning process. The session included Team building exercises, with examples of small group/team working in the institutes.

Dr. Shilpa Kshirsagar addressed Learning domains & Principles of learning by using interactive methods to keep the audience active and alert. Her session helped to demonstrate the basic understanding of hierarchy of learning, learning process, learning domains and the use of principles of learning in the teaching learning process. This was followed by session on Goals, Roles and Competencies, Learning objectives (LO) in CBME. Dr Pramila Menon used CBME UG/PG modules to define goals, roles, competencies, LOs and explained the relationship between each other. She also elaborated the principles of competency-based learning by highlighting the concept of IMG. The activity of designing L.O.s for a competency, done by the participants, gave further clarity.

Teaching learning methods (TLM) including interactive Large Group, Small Group methods session was made lively by Dr. Shilpa Kshirsagar. She made a lucid presentation. The participants actively participated by enumerating various Teaching learning methods (TLM),using the principles of interactive learning in a large group and demonstrating the various methods in small group teaching. The changing role of teacher from information provider to facilitator was stressed upon.

Dr. S. A. Kanitkar introduced the principles of assessment, elaborated upon the types and attributes of assessment. This was followed by a session on lnternal assessment (IA) and Formative Assessment. Dr Rashmi Prashant explained the steps in designing an IA module. The importance of IA is to provide effective feedback to students and improve the skills slowly. She helped the participants develop a plan for internal assessment and formative Assessment.
