The Department of Community Medicine and Medical Education Unit hosted a hands-on workshop on sampling techniques and sample size calculation on 19 April 2023, in the Central Library's computer lab. 39 students, including 34 MPTH and 5 M Optometry students, registered for the course.

The aim of the workshop was to improve the skills of the participants in sampling methods and calculation of sample size, without dwelling on tedious formulae. A wide range of topics such as sampling techniques and sample size calculation using statistical software were covered. Statistical software used were Win-Pepi and G* Power. There were 2 explanatory sessions and 3 hands-on sessions. Explanatory sessions included introduction to the concepts of sampling techniques and sample size calculation including formulae. The various terms used in sampling, types of sampling, inputs required for sample size calculation, the pros and cons of large and small samples & the difference between randomization and random sampling were covered. In the pre lunch session on sample size estimation was demonstrated using statistical software. After the facilitator demonstrated the sample size estimation the participants repeated the steps on their laptops. Hands- on session on descriptive and interventional studies were conducted in post lunch session. During this session the participants solved the sample size estimation problem on their own. The resource faculty were at hand to assist anyone who had difficulties .It was ensured that the next problem was not attempted till everyone was able to do it by themselves .Also hands-on session for randomization was taken, while giving a brief rationale for randomization. The participants also discussed their own proposals. Interactivity was a key feature with participants putting forth their views and clearing their doubts. Post tests revealed improvement in knowledge and skill. Participants appreciated the inputs that they received in the sessions.

Feedback from the participants was good. Most said the sessions were excellent. Almost all the participants were happy about the hands-on experience. Personal attention given to each participant by faculty and residents was appreciated. Feedback given by participants included: “The faculty and residents were calm and helpful. They gave personal attention for every doubt”;“easy to understand communication”. Many were happy that they could now relate more to the theory. Suggestions for improvement included: textual matter to be provided and need for more such workshops.

The resource faculty included, Dr. S. L. Jadhav, Dr. Hetal Rathod and Dr. Kajal Srivastava.
