On Thursday, November 10, 2022, Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pune, with the support of Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyaepeeth, Pune hosted a pre-conference workshop on Telemedicine which was organised by the Department of General Medicine. This workshop was conducted as a part of the Maharashtra Associations of Physicians Conference (MAPCON 2022). The purpose of this workshop was to highlight the virtues of telemedicine and to illustrate the use of emerging technologies in the field.

\n\n

The event was opened by Dr. S. A. Kanitkar, Head of the Department of Medicine who spoke about the origins of telemedicine, highlighted the importance of telemedicine in the recent pandemic and introduced the guest speakers.

\n\n

The inaugural function was attended by dignitaries from all verticals of Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth and from MAPCON 2022 organising committee as well. Dr. (Mrs) P. Vatsalaswamy, Director Academics addressed the gathering and spoke about the lives that had been saved using telemedicine and adjunct technologies during the COVID Pandemic. Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Dr. N. J. Pawar, gave a keynote address and spoke at length about progress made by Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth and also the ongoing efforts to integrate telemedicine into medical education and clinical practice.

The invited guest speakers really opened our eyes to the virtues of telemedicine. Dr. Suchitra Mankar, who runs a private telemedicine consultancy firm, gave an invigorating talk titled “The Essentials of Telemedicine.” She spoke passionately about how the technology for distance healthcare has improved since she was a physician in the armed forces and how it has enabled people in remote areas to receive quality care. Dr. Mankar also conducted a live role play exercise for the residents of the department of Medicine to drive home the take home points.

\n\n

Our very own Dr. Prashant Sakhvalkar, Assistant Professor of Critical Care medicine and ICU Incharge, DYPMCH, spoke about “The Role of SMS in Telemedicine.” He explained the advantages and disadvantages of short messages in telemedicine and also gave the students an orientation about the dos and dont’s in telemedicine. He ended by highlighting the importance of these services by showing real world evidence which showed improved patient compliance through SMS services.

\n\n

Dr. S.V Kulkarni, who is the president of the Telemedicine society of India, Maharashtra chapter, took to stage to give the final talk. He gave an incredibly electrifying talk about the “Devices in Telemedicine.” He demonstrated the use of many of these devices on stage and even gave free samples of some of them. He encouraged the audience to learn from the younger generations and to use technology to promote better health in places where it was most needed.

After a successful event, the vote of thanks was given by Dr. Ridhima Jakotia. The event was attended by residents of medicine from various centres and also faculty from various departments. Dr.Sanjay Patil attended as the MMC observer for the event.

The event was organized under the guidance of Dr. S. A. Kanitkar, Dr. Varsha Bhatt and Dr. Bhumika Vaishnav. Faculty Coordinators from the department of medicine included Dr. Mahesh Ohar, Dr. Narendran Sairam, Dr. Manaswini Edara. The event conducted with the help of residents of the Department of General Medicine. The event would not have been possible without the support of our Hon’ble Chancellor Dr. P. D. Patil Sir, Hon’ble Pro Chancellor Dr. Bhagyashree Patil Madam, Trustee Dr. Yashraj Patil Sir and Dr. Smita Jadav Madam and our Deputy Dean, Dr. H. G. Deshpande.
