The Department of Ophthalmology of Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College Pimpri Pune had organized Eye Donation Awareness Programme on occasion of 37^th National Eye Donation Fortnight 2022 from 25^th August 2022 to 8^th September 2022 which is celebrated all over the country with the Theme : Let your Eyes Change Someone’s Life, to create awareness among public about eye donation.

\n\n

The department conducted various events in the above-mentioned time period under the able guidance of Head of Department Dr. (Col) Shashi Prabha Prasad & Eye Bank Incharge Dr. O.K. Radhakrishnan. The support extended from our College Management Hon’ble Pro Chancellor, Dr. (Mrs) Bhagyashree Patil Madam, Hon’ble Treasurer & Trustee, Dr. Yashraj Patil and Dean and Dr. J. S. Bhawalkar helped the department to conduct various events smoothly.

\n\n

The Programme started with POSTER Competition for Students from Medical College (MBBS, Interns & Postgraduate) and students from other health sciences Colleges/Institutes under DPU viz., Dental College, Ayurved College, Homeopathy College, Physiotherapy College, Nursing College, Arts Commerce Science College and Optometry College. The faculty members of the Department of Ophthalmology were also inspired to participate in the competition and submitted beautiful posters made by them.

\n\n

There were 49 entries from students and faculty members and their posters were displayed on the display boards at the hospital gates in exhibition for patients and DPU Staff to see ,so that it inspires them to observe the fortnight and ask any queries which arise in their minds about Facts and Myths of Eye Donation .Post Graduate Students from Department of Ophthalmology helped solve queries of all and they also counseled many patients and relatives to pledge their eye for eye donation. At least 3000 people were inspired to think about eye donation during the fortnight when they visited the exhibition.

\n\n

All the entries in the POSTER Competition were wonderfully made with a lot of enthusiasm and had lots of messages for the general public and were made in Oil Pastels, Watercolors, Sketches and Digital Media.

\n\n

Dr. P. Vatsalaswamy (Director IQAC, DPU), Dr Vaishali Bharambe (Body Donation Incharge Dr DYPMC Pune) were the judges for the POSTER Competition. They were amazed at the themes and creativity shown by participants. They also suggested that prizes be given for different categories like theme, creativity, art etc. so that students are get a boost for participation & ideas.

\n\n

· A few students mentioned that they got to learn to make digital posters, thanks to the competition.

\n\n

The Students of College of Optometry from Dr. D. Y. Patil College, on 6^th September 2022 had organized a rally in collaboration with Department of Ophthalmology and about 100 optometry students participated in the Rally for creating awareness inside and around the College premise. They also performed a skit with slogans and songs with 15-20 participants, first in YCM Hospital premise and then in our college and hospital premise to create awareness about eye donation .They then proceeded to the place of the exhibition to see and appreciate the POSTERs made by their colleagues and medical college students.

\n\n

The last event was a Guest Lecture along with Prize Distribution of the POSTER Competition.

\n\n

The Programme was attended by a large number of audiences including students and faculty from seven colleges of DPU. Guest Speakers Dr. Sangeeta Wagh, Dr. Bageshri Gogate & Dr. Pranav More along with Dean, Dr. J. S. Bhawalkar were welcomed by Dr. Megha Kotecha and felicitated by HOD Dr. (Col) Shashi Prabha Prasad. This was followed by Lamp Lighting Ceremony by the guests.

\n\n

The Guest Lecture was delivered by Senior Renowned Cornea Specialist Dr Sangeeta Wagh from Ruby Hall Clinic Pune. Dr. Wagh is a member of Board of Trustees of the Prestigious L.V. Prasad Eye Institute Hyderabad and has a vast experience in eye donation and keratoplasty under her belt. She has treated thousands of corneal blindness cases to give them the gift of sight. Dr Bageshri Gogate, HOD, Department of Pathology and Eye Bank Incharge from SKNMC Pune also delivered a guest lecture on creating awareness for eye donation in society. Dr Pranav More, Renowned Cornea Surgeon from Pune gave an overview about all the eye donation & Keratoplasty related work done in the department of Ophthalmology of Dr DYPMC Pimpri Pune.

\n\n

The Guest Lecture started at 2.00 pm on 7^th September 2022 and was attended by all Faculty & Students from Medical, Optometry, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Physiotherapy, Dentistry & Nursing College. The programme started with Dr. Shailaja Anand giving a brief introduction about the fortnight celebrations followed by a beautiful video made by Dr. Aditya Ganesh showing the photos of various events of the Celebration of Fortnight.

\n\n

Dr. Sangeeta Wagh started her presentation with a very emotional film on eye donation and then proceeded to her talk on eye donation dos and don’ts and lastly followed by techniques of Keratoplasty. Q & A session was conducted in which Dr Sangeeta Wagh answered queries from Students & Faculty about eye donation and keratoplasty.

\n\n

The prize winners were announced by Dr. Radhika Paranjpe in 8 categories ,namely UG MBBS Students, PG Students Category and Optometry Students Category, Ayurved, Homeopathy, Nursing, Dental & Physiotherapy Category. All 49 participants of Poster competition also received Participation Certificates and a Goody box consisting of sweets .Dr Radhika congratulated the winners and appreciated the participants .She also delivered the Vote of Thanks to Guest Speakers , the College Management, Faculty,& Students from various colleges attending the programme and participating in large numbers.The Closing ceremony ended with tea , coffee and delicious snacks to the delight of the audience.

\n\n

The fortnight ended on a very promising future plan to continue creating awareness about eye donation in the society and improve the services of our Eye Bank.
