‘World Diabetes Day’ was celebrated on 28^th November 2024 by the Department of Paediatrics at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical. College, Hospital & Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune. This year’s theme was \"breaking barriers and bridging gaps.\" It focused on motivating children living with type 1 diabetes and educating them about managing their condition effectively. The event was marked by a series of activities aimed at promoting a better understanding of diabetes, its risks, and coping strategies.

The event was attended by the Dean, Dr. A. Rekha; the Medical Superintendent, Dr. H. H. Chavan; the Head of the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Shailaja Mane; the Pediatric Endocrinologist, Dr. Supriya Gupte; and Dr. Sajili Mehta; and fellows of pediatric endocrinology, Dr. Renuka Patil and Dr. Anjali Mujumdar.

The chief guest for the event was Mrs. Subhashini Naorem, the CEO of the Nityasha Foundation.

The talks emphasized the importance of education and support for children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Their presence underscored the commitment of our medical institution to advocate for diabetes awareness and patient education.

The World Diabetes Day program was a huge success, drawing a significant number of participants, including children, parents, healthcare professionals, and educators. The activities included informative workshops, interactive sessions, and engaging presentations, all designed to empower children with knowledge and practical skills to manage their diabetes.

Talks were delivered by the Dean and Medical Superintendent, where children and their parents were motivated about managing diabetes.
Dr. Supriya Gupte and Dr. Sajili Mehta conducted interactive sessions about the importance of blood sugar monitoring, insulin management, and the importance of a balanced diet. Interactive sessions encouraged children to ask questions and share their experiences, fostering a supportive environment.
The chief guest, Mrs. Subhashini, delivered motivational talks that inspired children to embrace their condition and lead healthy, active lives.
Educational talks were delivered by Dr. Renuka Patil on correct techniques of insulin administration, and Dr. Anjali Mujumdar spoke about sick day and hypoglycemia management.
Renowned nutritionist Mrs. Vaishali Madkaikar spoke about the importance of a balanced diet and introduced the children to carbohydrate counting.
Resource Distribution: Educational materials, including diabetes kits, educational booklets, nutritional booklets, and art kits, were distributed to participants, providing them with essential information they could refer to at home. The event was also followed by snacks.
Clinical psychologist Ms. Madhuri Patil emphasized the psychological aspect diabetes has on the lives of children and adolescents. The need for visiting a clinical psychologist in a timely manner can help significantly in managing type 1 DM.

The event was sponsored by Eric Lifesciences.

Feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive. Parents expressed gratitude for the knowledge gained, which has equipped them with the tools to better support their children. Many children reported feeling more confident in managing their diabetes, highlighting the event's impact on their self-esteem and understanding of the condition.

Conclusion: World Diabetes Day served as an effective platform to motivate and educate children with type 1 diabetes. The success of the program reflects our commitment to improving the lives of those affected by diabetes and fostering a community of support and knowledge. Moving forward, we aim to continue these educational initiatives and expand our outreach to ensure that every child with diabetes receives the guidance and care they need to thrive.
