The Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME) workshop approved by the National Medical Commission was conducted from 15-17 October 2024 at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune, by the Medical Education Unit. Thirty medical teachers participated in the workshop, and one teacher attended the last day session who was from the previous workshop, which was held on 24-26 April NMC. Appointed Coordinator, Dr. Suhasini Sonavdekar, Professor & Head, Department of Emergency Medicine, Maharashtra Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Nashik, supervised the workshop.

\n\n

The first day started with a pretest and was followed by the introduction of faculty and participants.

Dr. S.K. Kathpalia started the session on group dynamics. He made his session lively by using team-building exercises and videos, which helped the group to understand and apply concepts of group dynamics. There was informal discussion among the participants, which created a friendly atmosphere. They were taught the concepts of the working of groups/teams in teaching and learning so that they enjoy the teaching-learning process.

Dr. Arti Hajarnavis & Dr. Pramila Menon addressed learning domains & principles of learning. They used interactive methods that kept the participants active and alert. Active participation of the group was well appreciated. The session helped to demonstrate the basic understanding of the hierarchy of learning, the learning process, learning domains, and the use of principles of learning in the teaching-learning process.

Dr. Bageshree N. Pande introduced goals, roles, competencies, and learning objectives. In this session, the principles of competency-based learning were discussed in detail. The concept of IMG was highlighted. Framing of competency and learning objectives based on the competency was the group activity given to them. Each group got actively involved in the activity. The participants acquired an insightful knowledge about the various goals of an IMG and the concept of framing the SLOs. The feedback was positive in respect to active learning.

Dr. Shilpa Kshirsagar took a session on teaching-learning methods, which included orientation about various large and small group teaching methods. How to make a large group interactive was discussed, and a few small group teaching methods, like DOAP, were demonstrated via role play. Participants were given a group activity of choosing a TL method for a given competency.

Dr. Shubhangi Kanitkar took a session on internal assessment, and formative assessment was conducted by Dr. Kanitkar Shubhangi and Dr. Pramila Menon. The objectives were to understand steps in designing an AI module, to provide effective feedback to the students, and to develop a plan for internal assessment and formative assessment. It was demonstrated how l A can be calculated in all phases. The faculty shared examples of a module of the Department of Medicine.

\n\n

On the second day, Dr. Pramila Menon introduced AETCOM as a self-directed module. The participants were asked to go through it and make presentations in groups. All participants actively got involved and presented the topic in an interesting way. They used role plays, group discussions, and small group teaching methods. The feedback was positive in respect to active learning. It also gave insight about the implementation of AETCOM in the UG curriculum.

On the second day, in the second session, Dr. Pallavi Bajpayee introduced the concept and conduct of SDL. Examples of SDL implemented in the different departments were discussed by the participants. This helped in understanding the concept and conduct of SDL and clarified which activities can be included under the category of SDL. The need for SDL, which promotes lifelong learning, one of the competencies of IMG, was emphasized.

Effective Clinical & Practical Skill Teaching: Dr. Rashmi Prashant & Dr. Shilpa Kshirsagar The session started with a role play on clinical & practical skill teaching. Views from all groups were discussed.(Role Play by Dr. Rashmi. P., Dr. Shilpa, Dr. Bageshree)

Dr. Rashmi Prashant explained the effective method of practical & clinical skill teaching that it should be taught in small groups at the workplace, OPD/IPD/Ward on patients, and standardized patients. Can be taught in a skills lab, on mannequins. Different methods like OMP & SNAPPS were discussed.

All groups were made to mention in the flip chart about the practical & clinical skills they teach—how and where? Every group was asked to demonstrate too.

Dr. Archana Buch and Dr. Aati Hajarnavis took aligning of teaching-learning methods to objectives and competencies. The session started with an excellent role play explaining the need for aligning teaching and learning methods. All participants were actively involved while aligning TLM to their specific competencies. They could appropriately use different and newer methods to teach competencies of all three domains.

A session on assessment planning and writing the correct essay question and MCQs was conducted by Dr. S. Kanitkar. Dr. Shilpa Kshirsagar Dr. Sampada Tambolkar. How to frame essay questions and MCQs, along with the advantages and disadvantages of LAQs and MCQs, was discussed.

Dr. Sampada Tambolkar, Professor in Pediatrics, took a session on assessment tools and blueprinting at the recently concluded BCME workshop conducted from 15th to 17th October 2025. It was an interactive session where the nuances of blueprinting in medical education were precepted. The participants were actively engaged and designed a blueprint for their subjects as an activity for the workshop. The feedback was encouraging, and this will be helpful to make the assessment aligned with the competencies and more structured.

On day 3, Dr. Pallavi Bajpayee explained about writing a lesson plan. The various groups were asked to develop a lesson plan appropriate to the objectives and teaching-learning method by using UG/PG course syllabi. A detailed lesson plan of a theory topic was provided to each participant as a rough draft to follow. Set induction was also emphasized. The participants appreciated this session as it helped them to organize their lecture. Assessment of clinical & practical skills was taken by Dr. S.K. Kathpalia & Dr. Rashmi Prashant. As Kathpalia discussed in a very humorous & interesting way about different assessment methods—WPBA, logbook, long case presentation, short case presentation, viva, and spotters. Rashmi's session started with a role play about the subjective examination system & the importance of objective examination. She explained in detail about OSPE/OSCE/Mini CEX.

Also, tasks were given to all groups to write in Flip Chart about their assessment methods of certifiable skills.

Dr. Bageshree N. Pande took an informative session on academic growth and networking. The various avenues for growth in education and the role of MEU and faculty in MEU were discussed in detail. The participants paired and shared their experiences of networking. The various advantages and challenges of networking in education were discussed, where the participants took an active part in the discussion. Lastly, they were introduced to the various courses in medical education. The participants gave positive feedback about the session.

An aligning assessment method session was also taken by her in which assessment methods were aligned by participants to competencies of all 3 domains. Interactivity, role play, and use of videos during sessions were appreciated by participants.

Dr. Pramila Menon discussed principles of the mentorship program as per NMC directions. The group deliberated on their experiences as mentees. The challenges faced by the mentors with their own mentees were discussed. The solutions included informal meetings, and involving junior faculty and friends was suggested. The participants were asked to write down challenges and solutions in groups. It also helped in better implementation of the mentorship program in the UG curriculum.

Dr. Hetal Rathod discussed the draft of a schedule for a phase based on competencies. The steps in drafting a timetable for an academic year were explained by using examples like how to add AETCOM, ALT, and Pandemic by using UG/PG curriculum. She also discussed the challenges with the group, & participants also contributed their own experiences & discussed the importance of feedback in the CBME curriculum. She also discussed retro pre-feedback. Feedback helps us to improve our teaching skills and also helps us to understand whether learning has happened or not.
