World Breastfeeding Week 2023 events

1) Day 1: Date: 1st August 2024; Thursday

a) Topic: Myths about Breastfeeding

The session was for sensitization of pregnant mothers about the benefits of breast feeding. Myths and misconceptions, mother’s diet, breastfeeding frequency, types of milk and common issues of breast feeding were also discussed. Antenatal classes and education for expecting moms along with their families is very crucial for breastfeeding success.

b) Topic: Awareness & Guidance on Breastfeeding

Dr. Pallavi Tupkar spoke about the benefits of breastfeeding, correct techniques of breastfeeding (latching and positioning) and adequacy of breast milk supply. This initiative was taken to educate nursing students so that correct breastfeeding knowledge can be imparted to the mothers in the community and breastfeeding awareness can be spread to the grassroots.

Also provided ideas for boosting of mother’s confidence while using them and explained pros and cons of these aids. It was an engaging and interactive session. Breast anatomy and physiology of lactation were discussed in detail by Dr. Shailaja Mane. She also spoke about correct techniques of breastfeeding, breast massage, milk expression and reverse pressure softening technique.

Dr. Shailaja Mane spoke about prevention of engorgement, nipple soreness and mastitis and how Incision and drainage of breast abscess may impact breastfeeding. She emphasized the encouragement of mothers with breast abscess to continue breastfeeding.

Dr. Pratiksha Yadav spoke about the Ultrasound-guided breast abscess aspiration. she explains a procedure that uses ultrasound imaging to guide a needle into a breast abscess to drain pus. Aspiration ultrasound-guided breast abscess is a minimally invasive, effective, and safe procedure with advantages. She recommends aspiration ultrasound-guided should be the first choice in lactating breast abscesses with normal overlying skin.

As part of breastfeeding week celebration, a talk was organized for Antenatal and Postnatal mothers by the Department of Pediatrics at Urban Health Training Centre, Ajmera on 3rd August 2024 from 11 to 1 pm. It was conducted by Dr Renuka Jadhav (Professor and HOU) and Dr Richa (Assistant Professor). Dr Renuka Jadhav spoke about the detailed care of antenatal mothers, regular visits, supplements, initiation of breastfeeding within half hour, importance of colostrum, adequacy of feeds, preterm and term newborns, various feeding problems faced during breastfeeding, various nipple related issues and about psychological support to mother. Dr Richa spoke about the importance of breastfeeding, its advantages, the correct latching technique, the position of the baby while feeding, fore milk and hind milk, storage of milk and about complementary feeds. They also sensitized them about stoppage of bottle feeding and promote breastfeeding and support other mothers. Also, they were informed about the phenomenal work done by Yashoda milk bank for newborn babies. Around 30 people attended the talk and were very appreciative of this information related to breastfeeding. The people also asked questions and made it an interactive session. It was very well appreciated.

c) Topic- Enhancing and Maintaining a Good Milk Supply

The talk involved details about different indicators of breast milk adequacy and factors that affect milk supply. Ms. Rashmi guided new moms about enhancement and maintenance of their milk supply. She also advised about balanced diet for lactating mothers and the role of galactogogues.

4) Day 4: Date: 4^th August 2024; Sunday

Topic: Breastfeeding Promotion and Counselling

Speaker: Sister Yogita Gaikwad and Sister Chaya Roa

Time: 11am to 12 pm

Program For: PNC mothers

Sister Yogita Gaikwad and Sister Chaya Roa conducted a session about breastfeeding Promotion and Counselling. They educated the mothers about the importance of breastfeeding. The lecture was regarding the benefits of breastfeeding and early initiation of breastfeeding. Myths related to breastfeeding were cleared.

5) Day 5: Date: 5^th August 2024; Monday

World Breastfeeding Week 2024 theme was “CLOSING THE GAP: BREASTFEEDINF SUPPORT FOR ALL”. Dr. Sampada Tambolkar explained the objectives of World Breastfeeding Week 2024. She enumerated the theme for 2024 as Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all. The campaign will celebrate breastfeeding mothers in all their diversity, throughout their breastfeeding journeys, while showcasing the ways families, societies, communities, and health workers can have the back of every breastfeeding mother.

b) Topic:Importance of first 1000 days

Speaker: Dr. Pramila Menon (UNICEF Consultant, Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Lactation Consultant)

Preventive intervention for under-five mortality was highlighted by Dr. Pramila. She also spoke about the importance of nutrition during the first 1000 days window and how physical and mental development occurs. The impact of not breastfeeding during this period was also discussed.

Question and Answer with physiotherapy and nursing students

b) Topic: Early initiation of breastfeeding

Dr. Shilpa Kshirsagar gave a lecture on Early initiation of breastfeeding for Labour room, OT and ward nurses followed by demonstration on actual patient in labour room. Around 30 nurses participated and learnt about the importance, techniques, and advantages of early initiation of breastfeeding. At the end of the session, participants were motivated to do early initiation of breastfeeding in every patient.

Members of Sneh foundation performed a wonderful role play for increasing breastfeeding awareness. Through the skit, they gave recommendations for breastfeeding and spoke about importance of colostrum and breastfeeding. They also clarified different myths related to breastfeeding.

The introduction was given by Dr. Shailaja Mane ma'am (Professor and Head, Dept. of Pediatrics & Incharge and founder of YHMB & CLMTRC Dept. of Pediatrics). She spoke about World Breastfeeding Week 2024, its theme and the importance of Human milk donation. Dr. Pramil Menon madam (Professor Department of pediatrics) graced the occasion and encouraged the donor mothers.

Rotary President of RC Nigdi Rtn Suhas Dhamale First Lady Rtn Sujata Dhamale, Medical Director Rtn Mukund Muley , President of Inner wheel club of Nigdi Pride Sonali Jayant, secretary Kamaljit Dullat ,Rtn Aarti Jadhav ,Deepali Jadhav,Dr Mangal Gosavi and other members shared their views on Importance of human milk banking and their upcoming projects. Dr. Vineeta Pande ma'am (Professor, HOU Department of Pediatrics) spoke about the importance of breast milk and awareness about celebration of the World Breastfeeding Week.

Mothers who have donated milk to Yashoda Human Milk Bank were felicitated. Many donor and recipient mothers also shared their experiences. Certificate, Nutritious laddoos, set of sweaters for newborn and breastfeeding awareness booklets were distributed to the mothers in the postnatal wards by guest. Dr. Pallavi to do compering and Mrs. Chaya, Incharge sister of Milk Bank to do vote of thanks.

Around 40 ASHA Workers & ANC Mother participated and learnt about importance, techniques, advantages of early initiation of breastfeeding. At the end of the session, participants were motivated to do Early initiation of breastfeeding.
