Medical Education Unit conducted “Certificate course in Ethics” for 235 residents on 10^th July 2024.

\n\n

The session started with an address by Dean, Dr. J. S. Bhawalkar.He gave valuable advice about how Ethics is the most important aspect of medical practice.As per NMC guidelines all residents must complete this course not only for knowledge but need to practice in day-to-day professional life.He spoke about Attitude, Ethics and good communication skills which can make doctors successful in medical practice. It is important to be aware of principles of Bioethics like Autonomy Beneficence Maleficence and Justice.He also advised post graduate students to be attentive and sincere.

A. L. Kakrani, Professor of Clinical Eminence and Director Academic Collaborations gave an overview of history of Bioethics.He explained about Nuremberg code,Helminsinkideclaration, ICMR guidelines, stem cell research.

Shailaja Mane, Prof. & HOD, Department of Paediatrics explained about Autonomy, informed consent and how to use these principles in research.Dr. Kathpalia, Professor, Dept. of OB/GY, discussed ethical issues in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with interesting cases. Dr. P. Diggikar, Professor, General Medicine, discussed medico legal issues and recent guidelines. She also suggested how one should be careful and prevent errors in medical practiced. Dr.Pramila Menon spoke about the SPIKES model to break the bad news. Dr Pallavi Bajpayee explained the concept with case scenarios which made the discussion enjoyable. Dr. Dange spoke about Doctor Industry relationship, NMC guidelines regarding it and how doctors should not fall into the trap of pharmaceutical industries. He discussed the implications of the wrong doings.

The students did Self-directed learning of AETCOM module and resources about ethics. The students did previously and posttest.
