Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME) workshop approved by National Medical Commission was conducted from 24-26 April 2024 at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre Pimpri, Pune by the Medical Education Unit. Thirty medical teachers participated in the workshop and one teacher could not attend last day session due to personal reasons. NMC Appointed Coordinator, Dr. (Col) P. S. Chawla -Professor & Head, Department of Community Medicine, Smt. Kashibai Navale Medical College and General Hospital, Nahre, Pune supervised the workshop.

The first day started with Pre-test and was followed by introduction of faculty and participants.

Dr S.K. Kathpalia started the session of Group Dynamics. He made his session lively by using team building exercises and videos which helped the group to understand and apply concepts of group dynamics. There was informal discussion among the participants which created a friendly atmosphere. They were taught the concepts of working of groups/teams in teaching and learning so that they enjoy the teaching learning process.

Dr. Arti Hajarnavis & Dr. Pramila Menon addressed Learning domains& Principles of learning. They used interactive methods which kept the participants active and alert. Active participation of the group was well appreciated. The session helped to demonstrate the basic understanding of hierarchy of learning, learning process, learning domains and the use of principles of learning in the teaching learning process.

This was followed by session on Goals, Roles and Competencies, Learning objectives (LO) in CBME by Dr. Himadri Bal. He used CBME UG/PG modules to define goals, roles, competencies, LOs and explained the relationship between each other. He also discussed the principles of competency-based curriculum by highlighting the concept of IMG. The participants designed L.O.s for a competency in their own subject which gave further clarity.

Dr C R Gore & Dr Archana Buch made interactive session on Teaching learning methods (TLM) like Large Group, Small Group methods session by using confusion technique and fishbowl technique. The participants actively participated by enumerating various Teaching learning methods (TLM), using the principles of interactive learning in a large group and demonstrating the various methods in small group teaching. The changing role of teacher from information provider to facilitator was stressed upon.

Dr S Kanitkar explained the principles of assessment, elaborated upon the types and attributes of assessment which was followed by a session on internal assessment (IA) and Formative Assessment. The prior knowledge of the participants about internal assessment was discussed in detail. Dr Sampada Tambolkar explained the steps in designing an IA module. The importance of IA is to provide effective feedback to students, continuous class test and improve the skills. She helped the participants develop a plan for internal assessment and formative Assessment.

AETCOM module was shared on WhatsApp group of participants for self directed Learning. On the second day of workshop AETCOM: Concept and conduct was discussed by Dr Pramila Menon. The participants were asked to go through this module and present it in groups. There was active discussion on the implementation of AETCOM. The groups discussed their experience of AETCOM teaching done in the last year. The challenges of implementing AETCOM was time, Large group & inadequate training. The session helped the participants to incorporate AETCOM into regular teaching of different concepts as defined by NMC. The assessment of AETCOM which can be done by SAQ & reflection was discussed .This helped the faculty to understand how to implement AETCOM in institute using various teams and to integrate and apply innovative methods in teaching & assessment of AETCOM competencies. The importance of multidisciplinary team in all phases was demonstrated and discussed.

Dr Pallavi Bajpayee introduced Concept and conduct of SDL. There was group discussion on the examples of SDL implemented in the different departments which helped the participants in understanding the concept and conduct of SDL. SDL promotes lifelong learning which is one of the competencies of IMG.

Dr S K Kathpalia took the session on Effective clinical and practical skill teaching session. Dr Rashmi used interactive methods for active involvement of the participants. They discussed various methods which can be used to teach clinical skills like OMP, SNAPPS.

The skill modules used for the skill labs were discussed in detail and advised to include it in the regular timetable of the undergraduates.

Dr Rashmi Prashant facilitated the session on aligning TLMs for objectives and competencies. The concept of aligning TLM with competencies was discussed and group activity was given for selection of competencies from their own subjects which included 4 phases of undergraduate curriculum. The group selected the appropriate teaching method for various competencies.

Dr Archana Buch & Dr C R Gore planned group activity on SAQ/MCQ. The concept of blueprinting was explained in detail by using university exam question papers. There was discussion on Assessment planning and demonstration of writing the structured questions and MCQs. All participants were involved in framing appropriate questions including short answers & reasoning questions, appropriate scenario based MCQ by using examples from assessment module. The different examples of blueprint were shared.

On day 3 Dr Pallavi Bajpayee explained about the writing a lesson plan and the group was asked to develop a lesson plan appropriate to the objectives and teaching learning method by using UG/PG courses syllabus.The participants appreciated this session which helped them to organize their lecture.

Dr S K Kathpalia explained the assessment of the skills and discussed various methods like OSCE/OSPE, DOPS and WPBA. The skill lab which is used for Effective clinical and practical skills need to be assessed. Dr Rashmi used interactive methods for active involvement of the participants & the participants designed skill assessment station as per their competencies.

Dr Rashmi Prashant used the role play to deliver the session on Assessment of clinical and practical skills effectively. She discussed workplace-based assessment and OSCE /OSPE for skill lab.

Dr Arti Hajarnavis introduced Academic growth& networking. She made the session lively by discussing the experiences of the participants and the faculty about avenues for growth in education, Role of MEU and role of faculty in MEU opportunities.

Dr Sampada Tambolkar helped the participants to align the assessment to competency and TLMs.The group was involved in choosing the right assessment method for a given objective/competency and TLM. The examples of competencies from various phases were discussed in group followed by presentations.

Dr Pallavi Bajpayee gave overview of Mentoring. The mentee and mentor relationship is beyond academics .She shared her own example of mentor helping her in profession growth .The group also shared their experiences about family and hobbies related to personal life which was helped by mentors. She brought out the importance of principles of mentoring and applying these principles in UG/ PG curricula.

Dr Hetal Rathod discussed the draft of schedule for a phase based on competencies. The steps in drafting timetable for an academic year was explained by using examples like how to add AETCOM, ALT, Pandemic by using UG/PG curriculum. She also discussed the challenges with the group & participants also contributed their own experiences.

Dr Tilak discussed about importance of feedback in CBME curriculum. He also discussed about Retro pre feedback. Feedback help us to improve our teaching skills and also helps us to understand whether learning has happened or not.

Last day feedback was discussed and the participants were addressed and motivated by Dean Dr J . S. Bhawalkar. He advised all teachers to use the skills learnt in this workshop for smooth implementation of CBME. He also stressed the important point of inculcating the AETCOM values in students by becoming role models. Dr. Mrs P. Valsalaswamy Director Academics gave valuable guidance to all teachers. She advised the teachers to become motivational leaders for the students. She also suggested to use teaching techniques learnt in BCME in day-to-day practice.
